How Fast Is a Coyote? Calculate What You Saw
A coyote can reportedly reach 40 mph (64 km/h) in a sprint, according to the National Park Service’s Big Bend species profile, but that is a short-burst maximum rather than a sustained chase speed. During an encounter, the animal’s behavior, its distance from cover and the control of any nearby pet matter more than the headline number.
Forty mph cannot reveal whether a coyote is trotting home, pursuing prey, escorting a dog away from a den or slipping across a road. Treat the maximum like the temperature stamped on a broiler: available power, not a record of the whole event.
How fast can a coyote actually run?
Big Bend National Park says a coyote can “easily run” up to 30 mph and reach 40 mph in a sprint. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department publishes a 35-to-40-mph range. Its accompanying explanation is unusually useful: animal speeds are difficult to measure, individuals and conditions differ, and an escape burst cannot be maintained for a great distance.
That makes 40 mph a reported ceiling, not a guaranteed performance by every Canis latrans. It equals about 58.7 feet per second or 17.9 meters per second once attained. Neither agency supplies a coyote’s acceleration, a measured course, the duration of the top speed or a sample size. A page that repeats “40 mph” as the speed of an entire chase adds certainty the source never provided.
Other pages may say 35, 40 or 43 mph. Unless a source identifies the animal, timing method, distance and conditions, the extra digit is unsupported. The defensible answer is approximately 35 to 40 mph for a maximum run; Big Bend specifically identifies 40 mph as a sprint.
How can you calculate a coyote’s speed from doorbell video?
A camera can produce a speed for one observed run if the image contains a real distance and the recording preserves frames. It cannot establish the species maximum. The useful result is “this animal covered this measured segment at about this average speed.”
- Choose a measured line. Find two fixed points on the coyote’s path, such as driveway joints or fence posts, and measure the ground distance between them. Both points should sit close to the same plane; a line running toward the camera creates perspective error.
- Time the crossings. Note the frame in which the same part of the animal, preferably the nose or chest, crosses each point. Divide the number of frame intervals by the video’s frame rate. Thirty intervals in 30-fps footage equal one second.
- Convert the result. Divide feet traveled by elapsed seconds, then multiply by 0.6818 to obtain mph. A coyote covering 60 measured feet in two seconds averages 20.5 mph over that segment: `60 ÷ 2 × 0.6818 = 20.45`.
- Publish the uncertainty. If each crossing could be off by one frame, calculate the fast and slow versions. For the 60-foot example at 30 fps, 58 to 62 intervals produce roughly 19.8 to 21.2 mph. Report “about 20 to 21 mph,” not 20.45.
Curves, slopes, missing frames and a path angled through the depth of the picture can make the measured line too short. If the ground distance is unknown or the timestamp shows only whole seconds, the footage supports a description of gait and behavior, not a credible mph figure.
Why is sprint speed different from pursuit endurance?
Sprint speed is the highest velocity reached during a brief effort. Pursuit endurance is the ability to keep moving after that peak fades, change gait, follow a route and resume pressure. No agency consulted for this article gives a verified number of seconds that a coyote can hold 40 mph.
Texas Parks and Wildlife illustrates the difference with a jackrabbit. Its education page puts the rabbit at 45 mph over a half-mile and the coyote at 35 to 40 mph, then says the coyote can continue over a greater distance as the rabbit tires. Terrain changes the contest again. Big Bend National Park reports that coyotes usually hunt alone but may work with one or two others, using relays to tire or ambush prey. Brush, turns and escape cover can decide an encounter before either animal approaches its published maximum. A straight-line speed list leaves all of that out.
Which is faster: a coyote, a dog or a white-tailed deer?
The published figures overlap, and they were not produced by one standardized race. The cleanest comparison keeps the source and test attached to each number.

On those agency figures, a coyote’s upper estimate exceeds Maryland’s white-tailed-deer figure by 5 mph. At the lower end, they match. That narrow paper comparison cannot predict a pursuit because acceleration, footing, turns, condition and escape cover were not held constant. White-tailed deer also evade through bounding and terrain; the Maryland profile says they can clear barriers more than eight feet high.
“Are coyotes faster than dogs?” has no species-wide yes-or-no answer. AKC’s own Fast CAT design measures one dog at a time and ranks individual results, including mixed breeds. A fit sighthound on a straight 100-yard course is a poor stand-in for a family dog surprised beside scrub.
The coyote–roadrunner speed comparison belongs to animation history. ZooAmerica reports that a real roadrunner runs up to 15 mph for short distances, far below the coyote’s published sprint estimate. Neither that number nor the cartoon pairing explains how either species uses desert cover.
What should you do during a real coyote encounter?
Do not turn the encounter into a race. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission guidance says to stand tall, act assertively and haze a coyote with noise, waving arms or small objects. California Department of Fish and Wildlife adds that small children and pets should stay close while the person backs away slowly and allows the coyote to leave.
The same page supplies an exception that speed summaries often miss. A coyote holding a particular area between February and June may be defending a den; in that situation, the commission advises leaving calmly because hazing may not work. A coyote that fails to respond to direct hazing or acts aggressively without an apparent reason should be reported to local animal control.
Pet control comes before calculating distance. Why does a small pet change the risk?

A recent case shows why distance deserves more attention than a theoretical lifting limit. In August 2026, the owners of a small dog named Stan told ABC7 Chicago that they were less than 10 feet away when a coyote took the dog from an unfenced Lake Bluff, Illinois, yard and carried it toward woods. Police and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources investigated. The dog’s weight was not reported, and 10 feet was an eyewitness estimate made during a sudden event, so the case cannot answer the 20-pound question. It does show that “supervised” and “under physical control” are different conditions.
When are coyotes raising pups, and how far might they range?
North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says coyotes there mate around February and March and give birth in April and May. Its den-defense warning covers February through June. Yellowstone reports pups born in April and emerging from dens in May. These regional calendars broadly overlap, but latitude, weather and local conditions can shift activity; the local wildlife agency should set the planning window.
Home-range figures vary even more. The National Park Service reports 3 to 15 square miles in Yellowstone and 40 to 100 square miles in Big Bend. Those figures describe area, not a fixed distance that a coyote stays from a den or a house. They also explain why a sighting several blocks away does not identify the den location.
Repeated escorting behavior near the same trail during the local pup period is more actionable than a guessed running speed. North Carolina’s guidance says to avoid a repeatedly active area until pup-rearing season is over. That choice removes the dog from the conflict instead of testing whether either animal is faster.
What leash rule applies around coyote habitat?
Leash law depends on the jurisdiction.
